A few weeks ago it was Nesun Dorma (Opera Turandot) - an Aria to be sung by a Tenor who is seasoned in repertoire and career...Pavarotti sang it ...the greatest Tenor in the world at a time in his career when he was ready to do so...
You cannot be serious to let a child sing this! ...The poor thing screaming her guts out to make the notes and then call this 'great revelation' ...Tears and lauding, emotions, standing ovations, judges beyond themselves - OUTRAGEOUS ...This is gross irresponsible and those who are perpetrating this should be put away for child abuse.
Children who are prodigies on instruments, piano, violin, flute etc. and there are some incredible talents out there -are exactly that - extraordinary youngsters with enormous talent and virtuosity, taught by masters of the instrument, learning the PHYSICAL, MENTAL SKILLS AND TECHNIQUE of playing the instrument. All well and natural and completely acceptable; but this scenario cannot, under any circumstances, be compared to the needs of the Voice.
The voice is an internal instrument - not external ! You don't just change string if it breaks, you don't just get another one when the old one wears out. The Voice grows with the body at its on rate, it is delicate and vulnerable to abuse, to overtaxing it, stressing and overworking it, especially during its 'developmental' time, but in truth ALWAYS AND FOREVER!!!
THE VOICE is an instrument that breaks easily, that hurts, gets hoarse etc. develops nodules, polyps, disease, etc.....at any age, if it is not used properly and if the training is not continual and serious and correct, the instrument destroys itself.
Its like putting a souped up engine of a Ferrari into a bycicle...nonsense - a sure way to kill yourself. Well, that is the way I compare giving arias and repertoire to children who have no clue of how to 'play the instrument' and exhibiting them out there to show the world .....
I get letters every few days of someone having studied with 'great teachers, at great Voice Institutions' for a long time, or someone who has been in career for a while and their instruments are shot and no one can fix them. Then they come to me. We re-construct and life begins anew, thank G-d...but this irresponsibility, this sensationalism , this downright abuse of children's Voices has got to stop.
It has set a precedent and if at least the teaching were correct and not so destructive, well it could be said, that a child's Voice then grows into adulthood at its own rate, is watched and cared for and grows in time into its repertoire, which is what it should do -
These kids are just wasted.
The fault lies with the parents and the teachers. I almost cannot fault the promoters for this garbage because to them it means nothing but a buck - The thinking is momentary, jet-age mentality - do it now because where this one came from, there are others -
But those who have the responsiblity and obligation for the safety of their child, for their life and livelihood, for their future, should never ever allow such horror to occur.
HAS MONEY NO LIMIT? HAS INTEGRITY NO ROOM IN THIS WORLD ANYMORE??? I am totally appalled.
